Eagles sign Mike Danton

Znojmo - In a bid to strengthen its position in the league, the management of Znojmo Eagles has captured the first ever North American player to wear Eagles jersey. Mike Danton, 31-year old Canadian forward, has signed a contract until the end of the season.

Mike Danton, born as Mike Jefferson in Brampton, Ontario has experienced a career and personal life full of ups and downs. After coming through the ranks of Toronto St. Michael’s Majors and Barrie Colts in the Ontario Hockey League, he has clawed his way into the NHL squad of New Jersey Devils, scoring 2 goals in 17 games. Next season, he moved to St. Louis Blues and cemented his place as an NHL regular. Danton played 73 games for the Blues and recorded 13 points, including his first ever play-off goal.

However, he was sentenced to five years in prison soon after and his hockey career came to an end. Despite a long absence from the game, Danton enrolled at the university in 2009 and got back to game fitness soon after. In 2011, he was picked up by Swedish Division 1 side IFK Ore and chosen as a club captain. He led the team both on and off the ice, becoming a key figure of the team. He made headlines in autumn after saving the life of his opponent right on the ice with a quick reaction. Danton recorded 41 points in 27 games in Sweden.

“I know Mike since my time with Devils a few years ago,” said Znojmo head coach Martin Stloukal, formerly an agent of Jersey player Patrik Elias. “I am sure he will be a great addition to the team.”
